Opportunities with Clay this Summer @ Flock 9 Studios
Pam Dennis, 893 210th St, Ogden, IA 50212, 515-275-2594 My summer Heartland classes are finally posted in the online catalog. "Organic Sculpture" & "Clay-Heat-Smoke" are offered for grad credit, which involves out-of-class hours even if you are only taking it for license renewal. I've tried to make the extra work simple and flexible to accommodate your busy schedules. Basically, you can choose the activities which best suit your situation. For example, you can make some extra clay forms to fire, or spend the time sketching ideas to create. Online image research is also valid. Hopefully the new rules don't seem too overwhelming. "Little Hands in Clay" and "Nichos" are for license renewal only, so no "homework" "Clay - Heat - Smoke: Alternative Firing Techniques" 2 credits Location: Flock 9 Studios, 893 - 210th Street, Ogden Dates: June 8, 9, 22 & 23 (work due July 7), 2016 Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Explore diverse methods of low fire surface techniques from Raku to Pitfire at Flock 9 Studios near Ogden. We will create hand built forms the first two days using textures, burnishing and slips. The second session we'll fire pots using low temperature, fast firing processes for a variety of textures and colors on bisque clay. Participants are encouraged to research and bring low tech firing ideas and examples to share. Previous experience not required, just a love of clay, smoke, and experimentation. "Nichos - Mixed Media Boxes" 1 credit Location: Johnston AEA Office - Room: 113, 6500 Corporate Dr., Johnston Dates: June 19 & 20, 2016 Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Create a mixed media assemblage inspired from the Latino folk art of painted boxes called nichos or retablos, telling a story through small objects and designs. We will explore several small project techniques of weaving tooled metal and painting, along with using small items (paper, photos, beads, found objects, etc.) in assembling your Nicho. Express your imagination through this traditional art that has inspired modern artists such as Joseph Cornell. It is suggested that you spend some time researching Joseph Cornell and Nichos online prior to class. "Organic Sculpture" 1 credit Location: Flock 9 Studios, 893 - 210th Street, Ogden Dates: June 14, 15 (work due July 29), 2016 Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Work with a variety of natural and low cost materials inspired by Andy Goldsworthy's earthworks to create small sculptures. We will explore willow work techniques, make paper pulp / wire screen forms, and build an insect hotel for attracting pollinators. The small projects can be adapted for the art room or used as a collaborative installation for an outdoor classroom. "Little Hands in Clay" 1 credit Location: Flock 9 Studios, 893 - 210th Street, Ogden Dates: June 21 & July 7, 2016 Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM This class will explore a variety of simple hand built clay projects for elementary students during the first session at Flock 9 Studios. Fired bisque ware will be finished the second class at Johnston using several painting techniques I like to call "room temperature glazes" and mixed media embellishments.
