FEATURED ARTIST WORKSHOP FOR FALL CONFERENCE
Bart Vargas : 3-D Mixed Media Workshop:
I will demonstrate how I both teach students how to, and how in my own professional practice, I build polyhedrons out of everyday cardboard. Using this readily available, recyclable, democratic material, simple supplies, and easy to use templates downloaded from the Internet, we will build geometric mathematical forms that have been studied since the dawn of civilization. These geometric forms are a great way to connect the Arts to many other academic disciplines. From the natural world such as the crystalline forms of geologic minerals, to the biological anatomy of viruses and oceanic radiolarians, to the world of chemistry, and how these shapes help us understand the ionic bonds of atoms and molecules, and to the worlds of Art, design and architecture.
Besides referencing so many possible academic topics, building cardboard polyhedrons, and then designing or decorating their surfaces any way we choose, from drawing, painting, collage, assemblage, veneering, what have you… we can have infinite creative possibilities for fun! Participants may collect natural objects, found objects, or trash to incorporate into their individual projects. The cardboard polyhedrons will serve as a blank canvas for the artists.
