Lincoln North Star High School Art Teachers Lead Students on a Journey to Present Art I AM NOT YOUR MISCONCEPTION, Lincoln North Star High School Painting, Photography, Pottery, Digital Art Student Art Show Five Lincoln North Star High School art classes have collaborated to create their own exhibition based on the theme of Identity Misconceptions, which was installed for public viewing at LUX Center for the Arts on April 22nd. Students in the Advanced Art Courses at North Star explored traditional and contemporary art exhibition venues in Nebraska that support working artists and offer opportunities to create and present artwork. This project is a collaboration of North Star, and LUX Center for the Arts, and Doane College’s Arts Are Basic Program, whose mission is to support outstanding curriculum development. The public is invited to view the work during regular business hours of LUX from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and during the closing reception held during Lincoln’s First Friday Artwalk May 1st, from 5 to 8 p.m. Throughout the duration of this immersion unit, students explored all four Nebraska Visual Arts Standards: CREATE, PRESENT, RESPOND, CONNECT Learn more about this project or contact the NATA members involved in the collaboration: Lynette Fast (Painting), Jocelyn Reiss (Photography), Mollie Magunson (Pottery), and Lorinda Rice (LPS Visual Art Curriculum Consultant). Others instrumental in facilitation of the project were: Brooke Gillotti (Digital Art), Bri Murphy (LUX Center for the Arts Curator), and Rhea Gill (Doane College Arts Are Basic Director). Restructuring NATA - What are your visions? Teaching has changed. Professional responsibilities have changed. Students have changed. Accountability has changed. School/district structure has changed. Shoot, even lunch and recess has changed. Our responsibilities and needs are changing faster than we can keep up. The new NATA Board Structure is in a piloting phase right now. We are trying to determine where our focus should lie and what member's needs will be in the next 1-5 years and beyond. Please take 2 minutes to complete a brief survey that includes your opinion of which services are most important to you as NATA plans for support of art educators across the state of Nebraska. Please ask yourself what you need in order "to advocate for and advance art education in Nebraska to fulfill human potential and promote global understanding". Assessing Learning in Students' Responses to Works of Art Monday, April 27th - Saturday, May 2nd Event Hosts: Michelle Grohe (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum); Stephanie Downey (Randi Korn & Associates); Benjamin Tellie (Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Rockville, Maryland); and Olga Hubard (Teachers College Columbia University) The purpose of student interactions with works of art has been defined in multiple ways: from nurturing skills associated with critical thinking to enhancing empathy and cultural awareness; from learning about the history of art to nurturing profound experiences of artworks; and so forth. The way we assess student learning is inevitably linked to notions of how engagements with art matter. In this Interactive Café, researchers and practitioners share visions about the value of students' encounters with works of art and discuss how particular visions might influence-or be shaped by-approaches to assessment. Celebration Recognizes Sixty-Four Students K-12 On a lovely day March 21st in Lincoln, at the State Capitol, families filled the Rotunda for our annual Youth Art Month Celebration. During the 30 minute ceremony, a Lincoln North Star High School Vocal Trio opened the celebration with the National Anthem and special guest Senator Hansen lead the Pledge of Allegiance and addressed the audience about the importance of the arts. This year's words of inspiration were delivered by featured high school artist, Evan Spencer of Aurora, and 2014 Nebraska Art Educator of the Year, Dr. Lisa Kastello. NATA member Sarah Weganast is proud to be Evan's teacher. Thank you to the many NATA teachers that attended and assisted with the ceremony and packaging of the artwork. Special thanks to Jocelyn Reiss and Jody Boyer for facilitating the show. Debbie DeFrain and Carol Bom of the NDE provided the beautiful color programs and certificates for each student honored and coordinated the delivery and return of the artwork. News from other sources...Video Portraits of Nebraska Artists Project Well Underway with Great Success and Support As of Friday, the main interviews of the first four artists that were prioritized for the project have been completed. These are the interviews that are supported with funds from the Nebraska Arts Council (NAC). They include — Eddie Dominguez, Mary Zicafoose, Ying Zhu, Angela Drakeford. With two of these four — Eddie and Mary — we have also completed presenting to two arts classes and documenting the artists’ visits to their classrooms. We are still working to set up the school visits with Ying and Angela. The next task is to edit the interviews and presentations into the short video segments that will illustrate the Standards. The NAC made available short video segments with four artists who they interviewed several years ago. These are great pieces, but they provide only one viewpoint about one of the Visual Arts Standards. So, Laurie and Bill made the decision to interview them again — at no charge to the project — so that they can provide full answers to all standards. To date we’ve interviewed — Keith Jacobshagen, Karen Kunc In the near future, we’ll interview — Jun Kaneko, Michael James We’ve also received a second round of funding from the Cooper Foundation. That will allow us to document the lives and work of Littleton Alston, Nancy Friedemann-Sanchez, Donel Keeler, and Debra Salopek. View the beginnings of the project or contact Bill Ganzel to get your students involved with the project. Northern Plains Indian Artist Residency

If we have not received your work at TAC this is the schedule for when I will be available to show you where to unpack your work and to put key stickers on your name tags. Unless you are shipping your work, PLEASE DO NOT JUST DROP YOUR WORK OFF WITHOUT UNPACKING AND ADDING SILVER AND GOLD KEYS TO NAME TAGS. This helps make sure your work is unpacked properly and labeled correctly. When you come to TAC, bring work to fourth floor and see Lynn C. in office 4-163, if she is not there, try the second door on the left, this is a store room for all the works as they are checked in. We have started installing/hanging work so it is imperative we have your work asap, so it can be curated appropriately in the exhibit. Feb. 17 Tuesday Work til 5:45 p.m. Feb 18 Wednesday is Ash Wednesday so won't work as long. Feb 19 Thursday work til 5:00 Feb 20 Friday Work til 5:30 Feb 21st - DeAnn Hansich will be at TAC at 9:00 a.m. to work with volunteers to complete the installation of the exhibit. Please arrange a trip with your students to see the entire show once it is installed! I know many area schools come to the ceremony, but to experience it again as a class/school is an excellent opportunity to reflect and take in all the great work without the 'rush' of the ceremony. We have several schools that travel to Omaha 1 - 3 hours to view the exhibit and go to other art venues, like Joslyn, Bemis, Hot Shops etc. We would LOVE more Omaha, Bellevue, Lincoln, Millard students to attend the show as a field trip also. The dates are Feb. 23 - end of March. March is Youth Arts Month, so it a great time to plan this!

Nomination of students can only be made by Nebraskans for the Arts members, upon the recommendation of teachers or school administrators. Nebraskans for the Arts believes that student participation in high quality arts education contributes to overall higher student achievement, student engagement, critical thinking skills, and problem solving. Research from The Search Institute and Gallup supports the role of the arts in a positive school climate, hopefulness of students, and strong asset building. We believe the arts are essential and want to honor students who demonstrate both talent and the positive impact of the arts on their lives and the decisions they make. To increase recognition of our honorees, students will be showcased individually on the website: www.nebraskansforthearts.org. The student will receive a certificate of recognition, and the student’s school principal, superintendent and state senator will be notified in hopes of increasing awareness of the importance of these students’ achievements and talents.
