Introducing Your New NATA 2016 - 2018 Secretary
Hello! My name is Carolyn Albracht. I just finished my first year as art education faculty at Wayne State College. This summer I look forward to finishing my dissertation and getting hooded in August.  I also look forward to starting renovations of a building my husband and I purchased last summer in downtown Wayne, which will become Blue Cat Studio & Gallery. I love and admire too many famous artists to name just

one as my favorite, but I have long considered Picasso a significant influence on my creative process. I still remember seeing “Girl before a Mirror” for the first time in my 8th grade art class (shout out to Carol Schooley) at Walnut Jr. High in Grand Island. I love painting, doodling, collaging, mixed-media, making clay rattles, and fusing glass. My hobbies include cooking, baking, bowling, traveling, reading, and drinking margaritas. I am generally easy-going and laid-back (unless card or board games are involved-- then game on!) I start most days with a cappuccino, a few loving scratches to my cat, Pluto, leisurely conversation with my husband in the “green” room, and a bit of meditation.

2016 Fall Conference Plans Are Coming Together! - Personal Invite from Deb Goodenberger, Fall Conference Chair
Dear Fellow NATA members,
I would like to personally invite you to McCook for the 2016 Fall Conference. McCook is a small, but progressive community, with a fun downtown, restaurants and wonderful people. We are thrilled to share the state’s only Frank Lloyd Wright designed house with you and are very excited about our keynote speaker, Kenneth Shelton from LA, who will inspire us to “inspire” our students with technology and 21st century thinking!
Please consider presenting for us! Our theme of, Connections By Design, is open to many interpretations. Do you have a wonderful hands-on project that teaches the Elements and Principles of Design in an unique way? How about Architecture and Interior Design? We design our curriculum around “big ideas” and our spaces to make learning easier. We design technology to work for us. We “design” everything!

We will have the Art Educator show on McCook Community College campus in the     Wrightstone Gallery. Did you know MCC is the oldest community college in Nebraska? The show will be open to the public and publicized in the local paper. Instructor, Rick Johnson, PhD., our judge will give a wonderful critique--he always does and is much admired in our community.

So please consider presenting and/or attending our conference. We are working hard to make it a fun and inspiring experience for everyone! Hope to see you in McCook.

NCCAS Seeking Adjudicators to Score High School Student Work
The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) is issuing an invitation for arts educators interested in serving as adjudicators of the high school student work collected from diverse school settings across the nation as part of the 2015-16 Model Cornerstone Assessment (MCA) Pilot Project. The MCA high school pilot, partially funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, is the second phase of the project that began last year with a benchmarking of elementary and middle school student work in the arts disciplines of dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. As was done in the project's first phase, adjudicators will score the collected high school student work, with the goal of creating a resource bank of standards-based student work aligned to the 2014 National Core Arts Standards.
Model Cornerstone Assessments tasks at the benchmark grades of 2, 5, 8 and the three high school levels (proficient, accomplished, advanced) were released simultaneously with the Core Arts Standards. They were created by the five arts discipline NCCAS writing teams to serve as examples of the type of evidence needed to show student achievement reflected in targeted performance standards. The benchmark teams will conduct independent reviews of the student work virtually before gathering for a three-day meeting in Reston, Virginia, August 6-9 to determine final benchmark scoring. Five educators from each arts discipline will be selected to serve as benchmarking team members through a rigorous application and interview process that will open April 26th and continue until midnight, May 23, 2016. All travel, room, and board costs for the team members will be covered by NCCAS.
Interested individuals may apply at www.surveymonkey.com/r/HSBenchmarkers.
To access more details about the project please go to the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards wiki at nccas.wikispaces.com.
The National Core Arts Standards can be found at www.nationalartsstandards.org.

Introducing Amanda Suhr, NATA Bookkeeper
PictureAmanda Suhr and her darling daughter.
We are very excited to hire an official bookkeeper. In an association of over 200 members, art teachers rarely step up to volunteer for accounting roles. Imagine that!
Fortunately there are talented people that like to do numbers for a living. Amanda comes to us highly recommended from two arts non-profit organizations in Lincoln. She has worked 9 years as bookkeeper for Lincoln Arts Council and 2 years for Lux Center for the Arts. We are very excited of the experience with arts non-profits she will bring to our association. You will not see Amanda's face around much but know that the NATA finances are being diligently watched over by our NATA Bookkeeper and Treasurer team.

NATA AD-HOC COMMITTEES - Two Opportunities to Serve!

NATA advocates for and advances art education across the state. We also support art educators and the art community.
One way we do that is by hosting others' websites on the NATA website. NATA is forming an ad hoc committee to review criteria for hosting sites. If you are interested in participating in this committee, you must be a NATA member, currently not have a website being promoted on the NATA site, and be able to meet in person or electronically for a few hours in late April or early May. Please email Lorinda Rice (lrice@lps.org) and Bob Reeker (breeker@lps.org) with your interest. Plans are to present a recommendation to the NATA board at the summer board meeting.
Home School groups have expressed tons of interest in our support and we have learned there is a huge home school student body not being served by our association.
This committee will look at this issue and bring a recommendation to the board, by the summer board meeting.  If you have an interest in serving on this committee, please contact Jennifer Bockerman.  The committee plans to discuss this in one meeting by June to decide upon a recommendation.  Jennifer and Lynette Fast will organize a day/time for meeting when they have received enough interested members.

Opportunities with Clay this Summer @ Flock 9 Studios
Pam Dennis, 893 210th St, Ogden, IA 50212, 515-275-2594
My summer Heartland classes are finally posted in the online catalog. "Organic Sculpture" & "Clay-Heat-Smoke" are offered for grad credit, which involves out-of-class hours even if you are only taking it for license renewal. I've tried to make the extra work simple and flexible to accommodate  your busy schedules. Basically, you can choose the activities which best suit your situation. For example, you can make some extra clay forms to fire, or spend the time sketching ideas to create. Online image research is also valid. Hopefully the new rules don't seem too overwhelming.
"Little Hands in Clay" and "Nichos" are for license renewal only, so no "homework"

"Clay - Heat - Smoke: Alternative Firing Techniques"    2 credits
Location:    Flock 9 Studios, 893 - 210th Street, Ogden
Dates: June 8, 9, 22 & 23 (work due July 7), 2016
Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Explore diverse methods of low fire surface techniques from Raku to Pitfire at Flock 9 Studios near Ogden.  We will create hand built forms the first two days using textures, burnishing and slips. The second session we'll fire pots using low temperature, fast firing processes for a variety of textures and colors on bisque clay. Participants are encouraged to research and bring low tech firing ideas and examples to share. Previous experience not required, just a love of clay, smoke, and experimentation.

"Nichos - Mixed Media Boxes"         1 credit
Location:    Johnston AEA Office - Room: 113,   6500 Corporate Dr., Johnston
Dates: June 19 & 20, 2016
Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Create a mixed media assemblage inspired from the Latino folk art of painted boxes called nichos or retablos, telling a story through small objects and designs. We will explore several small project techniques of weaving tooled metal and painting, along with using small items (paper, photos, beads, found objects, etc.) in assembling your Nicho. Express your imagination through this traditional art that has inspired modern artists such as Joseph Cornell.  It is suggested that you spend some time researching Joseph Cornell and Nichos online prior to class.

"Organic Sculpture"    1 credit
Location:    Flock 9 Studios, 893 - 210th Street, Ogden
Dates: June 14, 15 (work due July 29), 2016
Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Work with a variety of natural and low cost materials inspired by Andy Goldsworthy's earthworks to create small sculptures. We will explore willow work techniques, make paper pulp / wire screen forms, and build an insect hotel for attracting pollinators. The small projects can be adapted for the art room or used as a collaborative installation for an outdoor classroom.

"Little Hands in Clay"     1 credit

Location:    Flock 9 Studios, 893 - 210th Street, Ogden
Dates: June 21 & July 7, 2016
Times: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
This class will explore a variety of simple hand built clay projects for elementary students during the first session at Flock 9 Studios. Fired bisque ware will be finished the second class at Johnston using several painting techniques I like to call "room temperature glazes" and mixed media embellishments.

Get a taste of the life of the artist-explorer as you combine experiences creating field studies with compositional refinement and careful oil paining practice in the studio. Like Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt, students will travel into nature to create field studies to be used as references for oil paintings created in Joslyn’s studios. Students will caravan to the Hitchcock Nature Center near Crescent, IA, to record views of the Missouri River Valley through photographs and pastel drawings. Back at Joslyn’s studios we’ll use our studies to create finished landscape paintings.

Inside Out Project
We are contacting you because we think you are a great interface between a world-wide participatory art project like the INSIDE OUT Project created by the TedPrize winning artist JR and the pupils in your community.
We want to develop this free and independent project in schools and are looking for schools that would be interested in getting involved with the Inside Out Project. We want students, with the help of their teachers, director and staff members, to raise awareness and draw attention to a cause that matters to them.

Are you interested in creating an Inside Out project in your school? Or do you know schools in your area that would be interested in creating an IOP project? From kindergarten to universities, we want to support any kind of project!
Let us know if you have any questions and go visit our website to know more about the projects that have been done all around the world!
Thank you! Best regards, Gianna, The Inside Out Team

November Student Art Exhibit
Thank you to 31 NATA members who took the opportunity to exhibit 62 student's art pieces at the Nebraska Association of School Boards Conference last week! Thank you to Jody Boyer, Jocelyn Reiss, and Mollie Magnuson for installing and deinstalling a beautiful display. Lynette Fast and Jody Boyer had the opportunity for in depth conversation with about 40 convention attendees about the value of supporting visual arts education and the importance of art educators across Nebraska. A special thank you to Dr. David Alati from OPS Norris Middle School for supporting Jody Boyer with professional leave to manage the display and spend a day at the exhibit. You too can provide your student's work at this exhibit in 2016. Get in the habit of holding work back for opportunities like this.

The Cornhusker Marriott Hotel is seeking its first artist in residence, a new venture that the hotel's owners say will enable interaction between guests and a local artist.
One artist is chosen from a pool of applicants and given the use of a working art studio that will be on the lobby level of the hotel for a full year, beginning April 1, 2016. During the residency, the selected artist will spend time creating pieces, hosting gallery nights and networking with guests.
General manager of The Cornhusker, Susan Madsen, said she is eager to begin the new program. “The Artist-in-Residence program will be an exciting way to meld the local art culture with The Cornhusker and give guests a unique memory with our hotel,” Madsen said in a news release. “Guests will have the opportunity to walk up to the artist’s studio, be a part of the creation process and build a personal connection with the designer. This will be a distinctive feature that we are excited to initiate.”
In addition to the provided studio space, the Artist in Residence will receive a $1,000 monthly stipend, complimentary meals in the hotel’s cafeteria and a $500 monthly house spend account for entertaining new and potential buyers. A legacy piece will be created during the year of residency to be on display permanently in the hotel.
Artist selection will begin with the Artist-in-Residence Program Board of Directors, a group of local art enthusiasts, including gallery owners, artists, curators and hotel managers. Six finalists will be chosen by the board and the finalists will then display their work for public voting. The final winner will be announced on Feb. 1, 2016.
The Cornhusker has already begun accepting applications for interested artists and welcomes any range of media. Artists who would like to be considered for the program can request an application by emailing ArtistInResidence@TheCornhusker.com. All applications are due by Dec. 1, 2015.
The Artist-in-Residence program was created by Marcus Hotels & Resorts in 2009 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee.  Marcus says the program encourages the public and guests to interact with a local artist, enriching the guest experience. The response to the program at The Pfister led to expanding the program to other company-owned properties. The Cornhusker, A Marriott Hotel, is at 333 South 13th St. For more information or to reserve accommodations, call 1-800-228-9290 or visit www.marriott.com/lnkfs.

Getting Your Classroom Resources Together...

NATA Members Are Very Busy Promoting Arts Education!

Please take a look at our 2014-15 NAEA/ Nebraska State Report . Our association is growing and the activity is stimulating. Throughout the year, please email us your upcoming visual arts activities and we will place them on the NATA calendar. To help us write this report every year, after you've completed any NATA activity, please update the NATA board using this submission form.

And now...Let's Plan Ahead!

The search is on for exciting and stimulating materials to use with students. In the last 5 years students have responded more to motivators, quick introductions, and reteaching through the use of online resources. Have you found your new resources for the coming year? Maybe you can use some of these to build upon a unit you already teach. If you have other great sources not included here, submit them to be posted next week.

Across the 500 miles of Nebraska, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of accomplished artists living and working. Here. Now. Each of their stories is unique. Our goal is to tell those stories within the context of the new Nebraska Fine Arts Educational Standards. Many video profiles of Nebraska artists and resources are available for teachers.
The project, which was initiated during 2007-08, featured five posters depicting works by critically acclaimed contemporary Nebraska artists Kent Bellows, Jun Kaneko, Karen Kunc, Keith Jacobshagen and Michael James. In collaboration with UNO's Center for Innovation in Arts Education, a comprehensive curriculum was developed for primary schools to support this project. The posters, which included educational resource material on the reverse, were then sent to all 1,413 Nebraska schools, covering both public and parochial institutions, and serving 326,153 students in all. The curriculum also included videos of the artists, which can be seen on this website and on NAC's YouTube Channel.
