Angela Drakeford is a young artist who grew up in Omaha. Her life changed when she the new Crystal Bridges Art Museum asked artists from all over the U.S. to submit new work for an ambitious survey of American art. The museum got 10,000 submissions from established artists as well as newcomers. The curators chose to include Angela’s work in the show that included only 103 artists. In this video from NebraskaArtists.org, Angela talks about how that process happened, and how her life has changed. She is now pursuing a masters degree in Philadelphia. one as my favorite, but I have long considered Picasso a significant influence on my creative process. I still remember seeing “Girl before a Mirror” for the first time in my 8th grade art class (shout out to Carol Schooley) at Walnut Jr. High in Grand Island. I love painting, doodling, collaging, mixed-media, making clay rattles, and fusing glass. My hobbies include cooking, baking, bowling, traveling, reading, and drinking margaritas. I am generally easy-going and laid-back (unless card or board games are involved-- then game on!) I start most days with a cappuccino, a few loving scratches to my cat, Pluto, leisurely conversation with my husband in the “green” room, and a bit of meditation.

You Can Advocate Support In LB957, the Nebraska Legislature voted to appropriate $500,000 a year for 10 years to the Cultural Preservation Endowment Fund, which is the state portion of the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. These funds must be matched with private donations raised by the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, with earnings distributed to support arts and cultural programs in the state. The Nebraska Cultural Endowment works because the Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska can only be allocated the earnings from the Endowment if they are matched dollar-for-dollar from private donations. The principal remains in the state treasury. This system has worked for many years. Thanks to this public/private match, over $8.3 million dollars has been distributed to arts organizations statewide without additional state or federal support. LB957 was passed by the Legislature on yesterday and presented to Governor Pete Ricketts. We need your help in contacting the Governor's office. Please encourage Governor Ricketts to keep the Cultural Preservation Endowment Fund provision as part of LB957 to benefit arts and humanities programs in this private-public partnership.
