Your Weekly Moment of Art Zen from NebraskaArtists.org
Angela Drakeford is a young artist who grew up in Omaha. Her life changed when she the new Crystal Bridges Art Museum asked artists from all over the U.S. to submit new work for an ambitious survey of American art. The museum got 10,000 submissions from established artists as well as newcomers. The curators chose to include Angela’s work in the show that included only 103 artists. In this video from NebraskaArtists.org, Angela talks about how that process happened, and how her life has changed. She is now pursuing a masters degree in Philadelphia. Here’s the link: http://www.nebraskaartists.org/movies/video12_2_3_b_Drakeford.html

Introducing Your New NATA 2016 - 2018 Treasurer
My name is Bill Cavill and I will be serving as the treasurer beginning in July. I currently work at UNK heading up the Art Education program. I taught K-12 art for seven years in South Dakota before moving to Kearney and have been here since 2011. My passions for teaching in art center around technology and visual culture. These days, I spend most of my days writing, writing, and rewriting as I am finishing up my doctorate and looking forward  to being done at the end of this summer.
Picture
My family last summer, from left to right: Adrienne (19) who is doing an internship in Ireland this summer through UNO. LillyAnn (16) who is rehearsing for her lead role in The Inventor’s Daughter at the Kearney Community Theater. Me (redacted) who is writing until his fingers bleed. Angela (25 again) who is working at YRTC and finishing her Master’s in School Counseling through UNK. Izzy (12) who is busy almost every day at the pool and who aspires to be a novelist. Will (14) who is enjoying some time off before detasseling starts in July.
When not writing, I much enjoy hanging out with my beautiful family, traveling, reading sci-fi, collecting comic books, collecting stoneware pottery, playing video games, and dabbling in a little art-making now and again.

My favorite artist right now is Wangechi Mutu. If you haven’t seen her work, I strongly encourage you to do so. It’s beautiful, frightening, and oh-so poignant.

Last Chance! Due Today, June 15th!

One of the special aspects of the NebraskaArtists.org project is that students are able to put questions directly to some of the most accomplished and interesting artists in the state. In this video, students at Lincoln’s Southwest High School ask ceramicist Eddie Dominguez what his favorite piece of art is, and why. HIs answer is surprisingly emotional. Introducing Your New NATA 2016 - 2018 Secretary
Hello! My name is Carolyn Albracht. I just finished my first year as art education faculty at Wayne State College. This summer I look forward to finishing my dissertation and getting hooded in August.  I also look forward to starting renovations of a building my husband and I purchased last summer in downtown Wayne, which will become Blue Cat Studio & Gallery. I love and admire too many famous artists to name just

one as my favorite, but I have long considered Picasso a significant influence on my creative process. I still remember seeing “Girl before a Mirror” for the first time in my 8th grade art class (shout out to Carol Schooley) at Walnut Jr. High in Grand Island. I love painting, doodling, collaging, mixed-media, making clay rattles, and fusing glass. My hobbies include cooking, baking, bowling, traveling, reading, and drinking margaritas. I am generally easy-going and laid-back (unless card or board games are involved-- then game on!) I start most days with a cappuccino, a few loving scratches to my cat, Pluto, leisurely conversation with my husband in the “green” room, and a bit of meditation.

2016 Fall Conference Plans Are Coming Together! - Personal Invite from Deb Goodenberger, Fall Conference Chair
Dear Fellow NATA members,
I would like to personally invite you to McCook for the 2016 Fall Conference. McCook is a small, but progressive community, with a fun downtown, restaurants and wonderful people. We are thrilled to share the state’s only Frank Lloyd Wright designed house with you and are very excited about our keynote speaker, Kenneth Shelton from LA, who will inspire us to “inspire” our students with technology and 21st century thinking!
Please consider presenting for us! Our theme of, Connections By Design, is open to many interpretations. Do you have a wonderful hands-on project that teaches the Elements and Principles of Design in an unique way? How about Architecture and Interior Design? We design our curriculum around “big ideas” and our spaces to make learning easier. We design technology to work for us. We “design” everything!

We will have the Art Educator show on McCook Community College campus in the     Wrightstone Gallery. Did you know MCC is the oldest community college in Nebraska? The show will be open to the public and publicized in the local paper. Instructor, Rick Johnson, PhD., our judge will give a wonderful critique--he always does and is much admired in our community.

So please consider presenting and/or attending our conference. We are working hard to make it a fun and inspiring experience for everyone! Hope to see you in McCook.

You Can Advocate Support
In LB957, the Nebraska Legislature voted to appropriate $500,000 a year for 10 years to the Cultural Preservation Endowment Fund, which is the state portion of the Nebraska Cultural Endowment. These funds must be matched with private donations raised by the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, with earnings distributed to support arts and cultural programs in the state.
The Nebraska Cultural Endowment works because the Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska can only be allocated the earnings from the Endowment if they are matched dollar-for-dollar from private donations. The principal remains in the state treasury. This system has worked for many years. Thanks to this public/private match, over $8.3 million dollars has been distributed to arts organizations statewide without additional state or federal support.
LB957 was passed by the Legislature on yesterday and presented to Governor Pete Ricketts. We need your help in contacting the Governor's office.
Please encourage Governor Ricketts to keep the Cultural Preservation Endowment Fund provision as part of LB957 to benefit arts and humanities programs in this private-public partnership.

You can advocate your support by:
  • Calling the Governor's Office: (402) 471-2244
  • Visit the Governor's website
  • Send the Governor an email via our VoterVoice system: Contact Governor Ricketts Now to Support the Arts
Thank you for your work in enhancing the arts and culture in our state!

I am excited to share that we are now inviting applications for the 2016 Class of NAEA's landmark School for Art Leaders at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
The School for Art Leaders uses action oriented experiential learning modules and in-depth conversations with expert leaders in a cohort model to enhance the effectiveness of seasoned leaders and support the development of future art education leaders. Resources and materials are research based and utilized throughout the program. The program begins on June 15, 2016 and concludes January 30, 2017. Participation in the School for Art Leaders is a surefire way to ignite passion for cultivating and nurturing emerging leaders for your association. Graduates of the 2015 class are already being called upon to lead local, state and national art education initiatives. Full details are available at: https://www.arteducators.org/events/school-for-art-leaders.
Warm regards, Deborah B. Reeve, EdD, NAEA Executive Director

Inside Out Project
We are contacting you because we think you are a great interface between a world-wide participatory art project like the INSIDE OUT Project created by the TedPrize winning artist JR and the pupils in your community.
We want to develop this free and independent project in schools and are looking for schools that would be interested in getting involved with the Inside Out Project. We want students, with the help of their teachers, director and staff members, to raise awareness and draw attention to a cause that matters to them.

Are you interested in creating an Inside Out project in your school? Or do you know schools in your area that would be interested in creating an IOP project? From kindergarten to universities, we want to support any kind of project!
Let us know if you have any questions and go visit our website to know more about the projects that have been done all around the world!
Thank you! Best regards, Gianna, The Inside Out Team
