Empowering the Digital Generation through Creating Highly Interactive Virtual Environments
Grant Project Awarded to UNO Professor Lu

The NATA member, Dr. Lilly Lu, an Art Education faculty member at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, was recently awarded a research grant ($8,250) from the National Art Education Foundation (NAEF), an affiliation of the National Art Education Association (NAEA). In this grant project, Empowering the Digital Generation through Creating Highly Interactive Virtual Environments (HIVEs), Dr. Lu will investigate what and how digital-generation students can learn about art and design through creating HIVEs—virtual worlds and digital games—as art. The grant will offer curriculum, pedagogy, and technology for students in partnering schools or non-profit organizations to create and design their own virtual worlds/video games and exhibit their artwork during virtual events.
If you or your school are interested in creating virtual worlds (such as Minecraft or Opensim) and digital games as art for your digital-generation students in the classroom or in art club settings, please contact Dr. Lilly Lu at lillylu26@gmail.com or lillylu@unomaha.edu.

Includes a Live Event on 09/08/2015 at 7:00 PM (EDT)
Providing alternative perspectives to structured sketchbooks, visual journals are an art form and a creative outlet for artists, writers, craft enthusiasts, teachers, and students. This webinar provides strategies and approaches—as well as tips, techniques, and prompts for implementing the visual journal as part of your personal art practice and curriculum. Explore how visual journals can facilitate a connection between your studio and teaching practices, and how you can transfer this personal artistic research into model behaviors and processes for your students. By implementing the visual journal as a key component of your curriculum, you can encourage students to engage in personally relevant artmaking experiences that emphasize process over product—resulting in increased student motivation and creativity.
