ESU South Workshop

Hosted by Rose Gallery and the NATA Community Team, Broken Bow, NE
The Broken Bow event was a cooperative activity, co-hosted by the Rose Gallery and the NATA Community team. Our goal was to provide a learning experience while primarily encouraging fellowship and an opportunity to connect art educators across the state. We purposely meet on weekends or summer schedules so subs and school absences are not required. Art educators are eager to meet casually as well as professionally, to share, learn from each other and celebrate their love to create art personally.
This Community workshop was based on the photography of Solomon Butcher, whose work is housed in the Custer County Historical Museum, across the street from the Rose Gallery. After touring the museum, we enjoyed "street lunches" then were guided through an art making experience with Colorado Artist, Gib Neal, former Hastings College Art Department Chair. Participants only provided black and white photo images of family history, which Gib demonstrated ways to build historical family assemblages to "Tell Their Stories" as is the theme for the NATA Fall Conference and has been a NAEA theme in 2017. Ten artists attended, from the Nebraska panhandle to a Grand Island private elementary social studies educator. It was a very comfortable day and an inspired group! Co-coordinators of the event were Paul Loomer and Gib Neal of the Rose Art Gallery and Jan Jones, NATA Community Director.

ESU 10 experienced another great day of fellowship, art making and instruction, Tuesday April 12, in Kearney! Twenty two participants attended! Sue Hart, Nationally recognized Collage Artist, inspired us to observe, play and create! New paper staining and collage techniques were explored, while role modeling how to share this experience with our students of all grade levels. Lorinda Rice also inspired participants by making the standards user friendly and modeling how to apply our collage making activity in our lesson plans and curriculum. Lorinda challenged us to seek out the right Power Standards and Essential Questions that guided our learning processes with purpose and further inspiration! What a fun day! Jan Jones ESU 10 Rep
