Dear NATA Members,Sr Margaret

Recognizing Professional Excellence ~ NATA Awards Program

The goals for NATA’s Awards Program are grounded in those of the National Art Education Association:

  • To focus professional attention on quality are education and exemplary art educators
  • To recognize excellence in art education practice, program design, and leadership
  • To increase public awareness of the importance of quality art education
  • To set standards for quality art education and show how they can be achieved
  • To provide tangible recognition of achievement, earn respect of colleagues, and enhance profession opportunities for NAEA/NATA members.

Each year, NATA recognizes members of our Association who represent professional excellence on the various levels of instructional practice: Elementary, Middle School/Junior High, Secondary, K-12, and Higher Education, as well as Art Administrators/Supervisors and Museum Educators.

The Outstanding Art Educator of the Year honor is given to an individual who meets exceptional standards of excellence and service in art education on local, state, and national levels. The recipient is also recognized at the NAEA National Conference and is selected in light of national standards.

Another award, named for Roscoe Shields, honors sustained leadership and service in art education by an individual or organization that is a member of NATA/NAEA. We also honor educators who are not art specialists but who go outside the usual realm to promote visual art education.

In 1994, NATA introduced the Prism award to honor a person or organization from outside our profession that has made significant contributions to the advancement of art education in Nebraska.

This year, NATA is introducing a new award, named for Marvin Spomer, long-time art education professor at UNL, to recognize novice art educators who are within their first five years of teaching.

Nominations for these awards may be submitted until February 15 and should be sent via email to jstern@gips.org. Detailed information and nomination forms for the NATA awards can be downloaded from www.nebraskaarteducators.org/awards_program.pdf. The document also includes a history of recipients since its beginnings in 1967. Please consider recommending a colleague you respect for an award in 2012.

It is important to note that award recipients are not expected to be perfect, just good role models who represent commitment to their profession through quality art education for their students, support for their colleagues, and involvement in venues that extend beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees, who received their awards at the Fall Conference:
Elementary ~ Mary Seger of Omaha Public Schools, Middle School ~ Jan Jones of Kearney Public Schools, Prism Award ~ Donalynn Rice of the Nebraska Department of Education and Lisa Smith of ESU #9 in Hastings, Roscoe Shields Award ~ Nancy Childs of Lincoln Public Schools, and the UNO Center for Innovation in Arts Education, and Nebraska Art Educator of the Year ~ Joseph Gregory of Omaha Public Schools.

NATA is proud to recognize these outstanding educators! Thank you for your dedication, leadership and contributions on behalf of art learners on all level in Nebraska!

Sr Margaret sig
